Sir Ernest Ryder
Sir Ernest Ryder Kt PC TD DL has been a Deputy Lieutenant for Oxfordshire since 2023. He is a part of the Lieutenancy team focused on Oxford West. He holds the Lieutenancy’s University of Oxford and the judiciary brief for the County.
Sir Ernest is the Master of Pembroke College, Oxford, and adviser to the Standards and Privileges Committees of the House of Commons. He was formerly one of the UK’s five heads of jurisdiction, alongside the geographic chief justices, and a judge of the Court of Appeal. He is closely involved in civic, governance, and charity work both in Oxford and nationally through his roles on the Charities Aid Foundation, the Nuffield Foundation, and advisory bodies across the spectrum of justice, medicine, education, social disadvantage, and inequality.
Before moving to Oxford, Sir Ernest was a Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester. He has a role in Oxford that helps bring together the colleges, the University, and those in local government and civic life to improve the common good.
