Protocol and Etiquette

The Lord-Lieutenant represents The King and when she is attending in an official capacity in Oxfordshire should be received at an event with broadly the same protocol as a member of the Royal Family.  She takes precedence over other civil dignitaries or guests at official events and should be met on arrival by the host.

The Lord-Lieutenant has a Vice Lord-Lieutenant, Ms Lynda Atkins, and 38 Deputy Lieutenants all of whom support the Lord-Lieutenant in the performance of her public duties.  Where the Lord-Lieutenant is unable to attend and she is represented by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant, or a Deputy Lieutenant, the same etiquette and protocol should be followed.

Address:

Written:  Mrs Marjorie Glasgow BEM, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Oxfordshire
Salutation:  Dear Lord-Lieutenant,

Spoken: A speech might begin: “Lord-Lieutenant, Ladies and Gentlemen….”

Conversation: She should be addressed as “Lord-Lieutenant” or “Mrs Glasgow”.

If the Lord-Lieutenant is being represented by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant or a Deputy Lieutenant, the above conventions should still apply.
